Dot Indigi
February 14th, 2009A top-level domain idea for indigenous peoples — .indigi.
There are many indigenous groups of people — American Indian tribes, for instance, or Australian aboriginal people — who would be great candidates for a new TLD, but can’t afford the steep ICANN fees. To give them at least some identity on the Internet, Karaitiana Taiuru, a Maori, has come up with a plan to let them register second-level names under .indigi, such as maori.indigi, or navajo.indigi, or taino.indigi.
Although I applaud the idea and the effort, I admit to being steamed at ICANN that they have allowed a fee structure that blocks new TLDs for these, certainly among the most deserving applicants.
Check out the .indigi site, or this blog post on .indigi which explains the plan in greater detail.

dot indigi. Lets keep the extensions to 3 letters max 4 or im sure all hell will break loose. isnt it confusing enuf now without having to spell out the extension?

I agree 3 letters in better, but there are already plenty with more letters that have already functioning: mobi, aero, coop, museum, travel, jobs, etc. I haven’t noticed all hell breaking loose - in fact, quite the opposite. With the exception of .mobi, they are all pretty much invisible.

“A top-level domain idea for indigenous peoples — .indigi.”
The problem with this extension is that “indigi” is not a real word.
It’s going to be confusing enough if a lot of alternate extensions are eventually allowed without adding made up words to the mix.
Present company of .nyc is excluded from above remark as it would be a very natural addition to the TLD catalog because it so very intuitive.
