I am evolution

August 29th, 2008

Holly Dunsworth sifting for fossilsHolly Dunsworth, a paleontologist with whom I traveled to Rusinga Island in Kenya recently, did a nice essay (written and spoken) on NPR about evolution and belief. And they used my photo (thank you).

As Holly put it otherwise, “The chicken *is* the egg.”

It’s refreshing to hear an American break out of the “culture wars” framework to speak about evolution so personally and convincingly. Even though this came out in May, I just stumbled across it. Nicely done.

For a longer view on Darwin, his legacy, and evolution, I also recommend The Theory Evolution of the Theory of Evolution Part I and Part II, episodes from Sam Wise’s extraordinary podcast and web site Sorting Out Science. Very highly recommended for intelligent people who aren’t scientists but want to know more. Jargon-free, but not dumbed down. This hardly-known gem reminds me why I love the Internet.

  1. Thanks for the link!

Meanwhile, I almost hate to pick this particular “nit,” but the name of the episodes is “The Evolution of the Theory of Evolution.”

    Just sayin’…
