Yourname.com — guaranteed!

October 21st, 2006

Elliot Noss spent $18 million to acquire all the family names at NetIdentity, but he still didn’t get noss.com, which belongs to some polluting paper pulp company.

Georgebush.com - gone!
Andreamerkel.com - gone!
Jacqueschirac.com - gone!
Tonyblair.com - gone!
Stephenharper.com - gone! (who’s he?)

Even world leaders can’t get their own domain name. No-one can. And everybody’s bitching and whining about it.

Trouble is, there’s more than one Bush, and more than one Noss. James Woods (oops, sorry, James M. Woods), when he’s in his cups, sneers about “that actor guy”. Jen Bekman, who did manage to get jenbekman.com for her gallery, tells me “I didn’t even want bekman.com.” Hmmm, perhaps…

PEOPLE YOU HAVE IT ALL BACKWARDS…

Actually it’s very simple to find the domain name that matches your name. You just have to follow naming best practices and exercise due diligence.

You don’t name a company until you’ve checked out the availability of trademarks and domain names. Don’t name yourself that way either!

Yes, name yourself. There’s nothing wrong with a little rebranding. Companies and celebrities do it all the time. It costs a little time and money, and if you’re not careful some brand confusion, but do it right and you’ll be better known, have more friends, and (most important) your own domain name.

FIRST find the domain name, and THEN use it as your name. Even if you did get your given name as a domain name, I’m sure there’s room for improvement!

You can even use elements of your reputation that could not possibly have been predicted when you were born:

George Bush –> GeorgeBu–shit.com (hyphens are allowed)
Tony Blair –> TonyPoodle.com
Jacques Chirac –> JacksIraq.com
Andrea Merkel –> ImaMuddle.com
Stephen Harper –> Stephenwhosthat.com
Elliot Noss –> elliotjustputsometechnologyaroundthat.com
James Woods –> jamescluetrain.com
Jen Bekman –> jenlivewithartitsgoodforyou.com

No matter how common your name, just follow my simple foolproof method and you can have everyone’s dream — your very own domain name.

  2. Hmmmm….

    elliotcontainsforwardlookingstatements.com?
    publiclytradednoss.com?
    ohhiitselliot.com?

Ultimately, only you can reinvent yourself. That’s what the religions say, but their road is hard — serious introspection plus 10% a year. But thanks to Tucows and others, with a domain name its cheap and easy!
