Branded domain activity in France

November 27th, 2005

And if I don't know anything about it?
Every Monday, the Journal du Net publishes a list of brand names registered under .FR. This Monday, we see the registration activity under .FR of such names as Adobe Systems France, Adidas, CNET, Coca-Cola, Credit Lyonnais, Fiat, MTV, Novartis, Pfizer, and others.

It’s an interesting snapshot of the thinking behind domain registration by larger companies. As well as the usual brand names and obvious misspellings, companies are also registering brand names + a generic description. For instance, alfaromeoservices.fr, adidasshop.fr, etc.

In a sign of good sense, a few of them are also registering generic terms, for instance teleshowbiz.fr (Fox Media), maprothesedentaire.fr (”my dental prosthesis”, GlaxoSmithKline), and pimpmytvs.fr (MTV).
